Comprehensive Travel Risk Management Support for COP30
Belém, Brasil, 6 to 21 November 2025
Contact UsBrazil will host the 30th Conference of Parties (COP30), the annual UN climate summit, in the city of Belém, capital of the state of Pará, from 6 to 21 November 2025. The event will gather representatives from foreign governments, international businesses, NGOs, and think tanks. A precursor event, Climate Action Week (CAW), is expected to take place earlier in the month.
The decision to hold COP30 in Belém, located in the heart of the Amazon region, is symbolic and significant. The summit is expected to highlight forest conservation, biodiversity, and sustainable development. However, logistical and infrastructure challenges, as well as potential protests by environmental and indigenous groups, are likely. Demonstrations may occur in Belém and other Brazilian cities during CAW and COP30.
Belém is generally considered a safe city by regional standards, though visitors should remain cautious, especially in crowded areas and at night. Below is some helpful travel and security information for attendees.
- Language: Portuguese is the official language. English is less commonly spoken outside hotels and tourist zones, so local support or translation services are recommended.
- Currency: The official currency is the Brazilian Real (BRL). As of October 2025, 1 USD ≈ 5.5 BRL. Credit cards are widely accepted in major establishments.
- Religion and culture: Brazil is predominantly Christian (Roman Catholic), with strong local and indigenous traditions in the Amazon. Respect local customs and avoid public political discussions on sensitive topics such as deforestation or indigenous rights.
- Visa requirements: Many nationalities can enter Brazil visa-free for up to 90 days; however, travelers should confirm entry requirements with the nearest Brazilian diplomatic mission.
- Air travel: Belém/Val-de-Cans International Airport (BEL) is approximately 12 km from the city centre. Pre-arranged transport and meet-and-greet services are recommended, particularly for first-time visitors.
- Local risks: Petty crime (pickpocketing, bag-snatching) can occur in public areas such as Ver-o-Peso Market, the Historic Centre, and Docas Station. Avoid isolated streets after dark.
- Health: Brazil’s private medical facilities in larger cities are of good standard, but options in Belém are more limited. Visitors should ensure comprehensive travel and medical insurance. Emergency number: 190 (Police) / 192 (Ambulance).
- Climate: Expect hot and humid weather (28–34 °C) with frequent rain. Plan for adequate hydration and sun protection during outdoor events.
